Travelling with Animals
You must comply with the following essential guidelines when traveling with animals.
The first step is to acquire the Pet Transport Guide (in Portuguese, Guia de Transporte Animal (GTA)) for domestic trips, and the Zoo Sanitary Certificate (in Portuguese, Zoonitário Internacional (ZT)) for international trips. To obtain these certificates, you should contact the Ministry of Agriculture or a veterinarian with authorization from the ministry to issue the certificates.
Trains
Some countries allow the transportation of animals on trains, although conditions vary according to the company and national laws. In countries where animal transport is allowed, the rules generally include taking the animal in special containers or with a lease and muzzle. Sometimes, small animals can be transported without additional costs, while larger animals are charged at 50% of the ticket price. Guide dogs can normally travel in the carriages without additional charges.
Air
In airplanes, animals should be transported in containers according to their size. Pregnant animals are not accepted.
Reservations for animals should be made at least 48 hours in advance. Normally, animals travel in the baggage compartment with an extra charge except in special cases, such as guide dogs for the blind. In both cases, the pet owners should present a mental health certificate and administer tranquilizers to the animals before traveling.
Bus
In general, only small animals are allowed to travel on buses inside containers that are appropriate for their size, and proof that the animal is up-to-date with vaccines. Rules vary according to the company and national laws.
Cruizer
With the exception of guide dogs, animals are not allowed on cruisers unless otherwise specified by the cruise planner.
